Needs Assessment

The capstone of this series, which pulls the regulations, data, resources, and challenges, is entitled The Opioids Crisis -Interventions and Innovations. The series includes an easy-to-find resource and regulations guide for national and state requirements.

There are many concerns that healthcare organizations, providers, and clinicians have in common with the ongoing national focus on opioid abuse and addiction. There is a tremendous amount of information and recommendations for how to best manage organizational and individual responsibilities to reduce the sources of this issue, but it is often difficult for the busy clinician and provider to get a national view and a local perspective.

The opioid epidemic is the deadliest drug overdose crisis in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that more than 72,000 people died of overdoses and that two-thirds of those deaths were linked to prescription opioids. In October of 2017, a national opioid crisis was declared and Patrice A. Harris, MD, chair of the American Medical Association Opioid Task Force, immediately responded by stating that “Ending the epidemic will require physicians, insurers, drug manufacturers, and the government to follow through with resources, evidence-based treatment plans and smart public policies at the national and state levels”.

A major contributing factor to the opioid crisis in the United States is the amount of opioid medication-assisted treatment that has been steadily increasing over the past decade, as well as the steady increase in patients seeking relief from acute and chronic pain. This series is designed in response to the opioid crisis, and to provide informational courses and resources to consolidate the best-practices for addressing this issue in the healthcare environment.

Overall Goal

The goal of this activity is to:

Provide healthcare practitioners with an overview of the current opioid crisis and the available resources to address the challenges that healthcare practitioners encounter related to opioids.

Discuss how to recognize the warning signs of drug-seeking behaviors in patients and staff and how to utilize assessment tools.

Discuss the factors related to the role healthcare practitioners play in prescribing opioids, overdose prevention, and the availability of assessment tools and treatment alternatives.

Identify resources at the state and federal level, including current regulations regarding opioid prescribing and opioid misuse.

Prescription Drug Abuse

This course will assist clinicians and providers with identifying the patient populations that are the greatest risk, the various types of commonly abused prescription medications.

Responsible opioid Priscribing

This course reviews the current prescribing guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including important feedback from key stakeholders.

Recognizing Staff With Substance Abuse Disorders

This course reviews the signs of addiction that employees, including providers, may display in the workplace, as well as the available state and federal resources.

Drug-Seeking Behavior

This course provides clinicians and providers with a detailed understanding of how to identify patterns of drug-seeking behavior that can result in an opioid overdose.

By participating in this series,
participants will:

Know how to access and utilize the new specific state requirements and resources for appropriate pain management and opioid prescribing

Recognize common habits of opioid addiction, which allows the healthcare professional to address this behavior professionally and legally.

Be familiar with the rights and responsibilities of the employer to address any issues.

Receive a 360° view of the national opioid crisis, and position statements from key healthcare associations and best practices to better understand their role in combating the opioid crisis.
